Election night in Bologna (Sera dell’elezione a Bologna)

Election night in Bologna (Sera dell’elezione a Bologna)

Friday, November 18th, 2016

November 8th in Bologna and the election day in the US. Given the time difference of 9 hours the polls on the west coast closed at 6 PM so that translates to 3 AM in Bologna. There was a great amount of interest in US election there not only because we are a world power but also because it was such an “unusual” election with two candidates that each seemed to produce fear and loathing in half of the population. One of which was a loose cannon and described by most of my Italian friends with fear. I count myself among that group. In any case I found that Biblioteca Sala Borsa had decided to have the main hall open all night with a big screen showing CNN to watch the election returns. I thought that it would be interesting to go.

It took some effort to get out of bed when the alarm went off at 3:30 but I managed to get out of the door and walk to the center. The city was eerily deserted – I saw two bicyclists and two street sweepers and nothing else was moving. Of course it’s probably normally that way in the wee hours of a Wednesday morning. At the library there few people, I would guess 20 and none that I could readily identify as American; they all seemed to be Italian. Either they were very good English speakers or they just watched the numbers and maps since the commentator spoke rapidly and continuously – quite a talent.  There were also 5 Carabiniere (elite police force) milling around. Why, I don’t know and I didn’t ask.

Not many people (poche persone)

I left at about 4:30 when it seemed certain (to my shock and consternation) that Trump was going to win. I ambled back home and spent most of the rest of the night staring at the ceiling. I also received texts in the early morning from a couple of Italian friends that were equally stunned by the results. Well, they had Berlusconi…..

Be’, loro avevano avuto Berlusconi… …
